A helicopter carrying Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi and Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian crashed on Sunday while crossing a mountainous area in heavy fog on the way back from a visit to Azerbaijan.
The helicopter made a rough landing, and rescue teams have been dispatched to the area, but inclement weather, including heavy fog and rain, has obstructed their progress.
State media reported that the incident occurred near the village of Uzi in the East Azerbaijan province, approximately 600km northwest of Tehran.
Interior Minister Ahmed Vahidi confirmed that one of the three helicopters in the president’s convoy experienced a hard landing due to bad weather conditions.
Authorities are currently gathering more information, and it is unclear if there are any casualties or the exact condition of President Raisi and Foreign Minister Amirabdollahian. The cause of the crash has not been officially determined.
President Raisi, 63, was visiting Azerbaijan to inaugurate a dam project with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev. He has been president of Iran since June 2021, succeeding Hassan Rouhani.
