Wabara, the former president of the Senate, has disclosed that he turned down N250 million to fund former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s third-term ambition.
When questioned if this claim was true, in an extract from the Monday-released YouTube interview series “Untold Stories with Adesuwa,” he responded, “That’s very correct.”
The third-term agenda, which included a constitutional reform package intended to permit then-President Olusegun Obasanjo to compete for a third term in office, represented a turning point in Nigeria’s 25 years of continuous democracy.
Wabara went on to say that although he didn’t trust the rumors that certain senators had received N50 million at the time, he had actually received a N250 million bribe that was delivered to him in a G-Wagon around 1:20 a.m.
Wabara added that rejecting the third-term objective was greatly influenced by his educational background.
“I declined a bribe of N250 million to back the agenda for the third term. Before my third-term address, at 1:30 a.m., I received the money. It arrived in a shiny, black G-Wagon. It was in a decrepit 504 station wagon and a black G-Wagon, as I still recall. My spouse was present when the funds were released.
Wabara emphasized the importance of the choice by saying that subsequent presidents would not have been elected if the third-term plan had been allowed to continue.
Democracy today would not exist if there were no individuals like us. Indeed, if we had backed the third term, we would have experienced tyranny, and Without it, no one would have become Buhari. Because Obasanjo would still be in place, even the current Tinubu would not have emerged, he claimed.
Speaking on the nation’s current situation, Wabara regretted that the powerful had, regrettably, weaponized poverty.
In his own words: “Hunger misleads, and my people claim that you are the one they will follow as long as you are eating leaves or anything else the goat consumes. This is the result of hunger driving events in our democracy today. Government officials, including the elderly, are not fostering conditions that encourage avoiding hunger. It is a calculated move to keep the electorate hungry in order to get them to follow sheepishly. Thus, stomach infrastructure before they begin to question if we are being led correctly.
