Tinubu’s Power Promise: ‘Constant Electricity or No Re-Election

President Bola Tinubu has made a bold promise to Nigerians – to provide constant electricity for four years, or risk not getting re-elected for a second term. This vow is part of his administration’s broader vision to achieve uninterrupted electricity within seven years.

According to Nasir el-Rufai, former governor of Kaduna, Tinubu is committed to addressing Nigeria’s electricity problems head-on by putting permanent solutions in place. El-Rufai emphasized that without constant electricity, serious industrialization cannot take place in the country.

To achieve this goal, the government plans to tackle the challenges facing power generation, transmission, and distribution. One major issue is the inadequate supply of gas to power generation stations.

While some Nigerians are optimistic about Tinubu’s promise, others remain skeptical, citing past unfulfilled promises by previous administrations. The success of this initiative will likely depend on the government’s ability to address corruption, security concerns, and infrastructure deficits in the power sector.

Key Challenges:

  • Inadequate Gas Supply: 80% of Nigeria’s power generation relies on gas, but supply constraints hinder optimal production.
  • Transmission Infrastructure: The national grid requires upgrading to support increased power generation and distribution.
  • Corruption and Security Concerns: Addressing these issues is crucial to ensuring the success of Tinubu’s electricity promise.

Only time will tell if President Tinubu’s administration can deliver on this ambitious promise and transform Nigeria’s power sector.
