Nigeria, the nine-time African champions, will make their first participation at the Women’s Olympic Football Tournament since 2008. They will face Brazil, Spain, and Japan in this year’s competition.
The Falcons qualified for the 12-team competition after overcoming South Africa’s Banyana Banyana 1-0 in Abuja, due to a penalty strike from Ajibade, which separated Africa’s top two teams over two legs in April.
Nigeria’s first match will be against Brazil on July 25 at the Stade Bordeaux, followed by games against Spain on July 28 and Japan on July 31 at the Stade de la Beaujoire in Nantes. This venue is noteworthy for the Super Eagles’ 3-2 triumph over Spain in the 1998 FIFA World Cup finals.
