URGENT REQUEST TO REVERSE THE IMPOSED 10,000 NAIRA CHARGE ON ALL FCET AKOKA STUDENTS
The Southwest Region of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has become aware of a recent decision by the Federal College of Education (Technical), Akoka management to impose a blanket charge of 10,000 Naira on all students.
This charge is allegedly in response to damages incurred during recent student unrest, which stemmed from students’ rightful expression of concerns about the college’s leadership and policies.
This decision has come as a shock to students and is widely perceived as a sucide act, unfair and insensitive particularly in the context of Nigeria’s current economic climate. Students and their families are already grappling with high costs of living, including basic needs such as food and essential supplies. The imposition of this N10,000 surcharge only adds to the financial burden faced by students, further threatening their ability to continue their education.
As an organization dedicated to protecting the rights and welfare of Nigerian students, we find this blanket charge unacceptable. The college administration’s failure to address the underlying causes of the unrest while collectively punishing all students, regardless of their involvement, represents a significant disregard for fairness and due process. Such actions ignore the real frustrations that led to the unrest and unjustly penalize all students.
In light of these serious concerns, the Southwest Region of NANS urgently calls upon the college management to reconsider and reverse this unjust surcharge. If the management fails to take immediate corrective action, we will have no choice but to mobilize for a peaceful protest that will give voice to the legitimate grievances of the student body.
We remain hopeful that the college administration will act swiftly to engage in dialogue, demonstrate empathy, and resolve this matter fairly and justly.
We thank you for your attention to this critical issue and look forward to a favorable response.
Yours sincerely
