Lagos Island Maternity Hospital, in collaboration with the Lagos State Government on “Project 10 Million”, has offered scores of people, including patients and staff, free health screenings to mitigate the health risks associated with hypertension and diabetes that are now prevalent in the country
The exercise, which witnessed a large turnout of residents, was held on Friday inside the hospital’s car park on the Island.
The proactive move on the life-threatening diseases by the hospital, is in line with the State Government’s effort at curtailing the dreaded Hypertension Diabetes Mellitus through a comprehensive screening and public health enlightenment campaign tagged, “Know Your Numbers, Control Your Numbers”.
Speaking at the event, the Head of Pharmacy of the hospital, Pharmacist Solape Adebayo said hypertension and diabetes, including obesity and high blood sugar, if detected early, could be proactively contained, through strict compliance to prescribed drugs routine and healthy living.
She said people will be doing themselves a world of good by engaging in regular check-ups for early detection of disease or ailment, to prevent untold suffering when allowed to get out of hand, before seeking medical help.
According to her, “The diseases are treatable if detected early, with a healthy diet and disengagement from unwholesome lifestyle”.
The Medical Director/CEO of LIMH, Dr. Olufemi Omololu explained that the campaign is in line with the National “10 Million Project” initiated by the Nigeria Governors’ Forum.
He said the event, which coincided with the World Stroke Day of October 29, 2024, was designed to better educate the masses on the diseases that often lead to stroke, adding that the exercise is also to availed the people opportunities of free vital checks from 29th October to November 1, 2024.
Speaking further, Dr. Omololu explained that through regular checks on blood pressure, blood sugar screening, and other vital health indices, residents “can take control of their health”, adding that such initiative by the State Government has, once again, demonstrated its intention and determination to safeguard the health and well-being of Lagosians, irrespective of state of origin.
The programme had Doctors, Pharmacists, Nurses and Medical Laboratory officers on ground, tending to the health needs of people that turned out.
