Representatives from mining host communities across Nigeria have called on the Federal Government to prioritize the wellbeing of their communities and hold mining companies accountable for the damages caused by both legal and illegal mining activities.
This plea was made during the 2024 Multistakeholder Roundtable on Enhancing Inclusiveness and Addressing Inequalities in Nigeria’s Mining Sector, held at the Rockview Hotel, Abuja.
Mrs. Abiodun Baiyewu, Executive Director of Global Rights, highlighted the severe impact of mining activities on these communities, revealing that over 700 children have lost their lives due to lead poisoning. Community leaders also voiced concerns that mining is overshadowing agriculture, which has traditionally been their primary source of livelihood.
Nigeria, unlike many other countries, is abundantly blessed with natural resources. However, poor management and corruption have left the nation heavily indebted, turning what could be a blessing into a curse. The roundtable discussions underscored the urgent need for reforms to ensure that the wealth generated from mining benefits all Nigerians and not just a select few.
The event served as a crucial platform for stakeholders to address the inequalities within the sector and push for a more inclusive approach to resource management in Nigeria.
