The Lagos State Government has issued a warning to residents living along the Ogun River banks to relocate temporarily due to the planned water release from the Oyan Dam. This annual exercise aims to manage dam levels during the rainy season, but it may cause rivers to overflow, leading to severe flooding.
Affected Areas and Precautions
Residents in low-lying areas, particularly those in Ajilete and surrounding areas, including Kara, Mile 12, Agiliti, Ikosi Ketu, Owode, Ajegunle, and Odo-Ogun, are advised to take necessary precautions. The Lagos State Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, emphasized the importance of relocating to safer grounds to avoid devastating flooding incidents.
Dredging Efforts to Mitigate Flooding
To reduce flood risks, the Federal Government has commenced dredging rivers along the dam’s corridor. The Ogun-Oshun River Basin Development Authority (OORBDA) has also assured that the water release will not lead to flooding incidents, citing regular maintenance and monitoring of the dam.
Stay Informed and Stay Safe
Residents are urged to remain vigilant and report any drainage blockages or concerns to the relevant authorities. The Lagos State Government will continue to monitor the situation closely and collaborate with affected communities to address humanitarian concerns.
