Justice for Samgrin: NANS Southwest Zone D Denounces RTEAN’s Violence

NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF NIGERIAN STUDENTS, SOUTHWEST, ZONE D

Condemning the Heinous Assault on Comr. Olalere Samuel Owoseni (Samgrin), Former LASUSU President

The reprehensible and barbaric attack on Comr. Olalere Samuel, popularly known as Samgrin, former President of the Lagos State University Students’ Union (LASUSU), has sparked outrage and deep concern among student bodies and civil society.
This despicable act, carried out by elements within the Road Transport Employers’ Association of Nigeria (RTEAN), represents not only an attack on one individual but an affront to the entire student movement and all who advocate for justice and equity.

The molestation and beating of Comr. Samgrin, a respected leader with a proven track record of service to the student community and beyond, must be unequivocally condemned in the strongest terms. It is shocking that such barbarism could occur in broad daylight, perpetuated by known associates of the current RTEAN leadership under Ajala Samsodden Adepoju. The involvement of the RTEAN SECRETARY, Yusuf Shamsodeen Adebayo(SHAMEE ALABA) and a notorious cultist, Saliu Usman(Baba Nee), who allegedly led the assault, signals a troubling and dangerous trend within the association—a culture of thuggery and intimidation that has no place in a civilized society.

On the 22nd of October at approximately 12:15 PM, Comr. Olalere Samuel was brutally attacked by thugs acting under the orders of influential figures within RTEAN.
According to multiple eyewitness accounts, Samgrin was verbally abused, and subjected to severe physical violence by Shamee and Baba Nee and his gang. The assault left him with multiple injuries, for which he has since sought medical attention. This blatant act of thuggery has shocked and angered the Nigerian student community, many of whom have taken to social media, trending hashtags in support of Samgrin and calling for justice.

We, the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), unequivocally denounce this heinous act. We view this assault as an attack on not just Comr. Samgrin but on every Nigerian student, activist, and advocate who taste for justice and the rights of the oppressed. An injury to one is an injury to all, and NANS is ready to confront the RTEAN leadership and any individual or group that continues to use violence as a tool to suppress differing opinions or challenges to their authority.

NANS demands a full investigation into this vicious attack. We call on the Lagos State Government, law enforcement agencies, and all relevant authorities to ensure that those responsible for this barbarism are brought to justice. This culture of impunity, where powerful individuals believe they can assault, intimidate, and silence dissenting voices, must be uprooted. We insist that Ajala Samsodden Adepoju, the RTEAN state chairman, the secretary and all those connected to this assault be held accountable for their actions.

The RTEAN leadership must also take responsibility for allowing such thuggery to thrive within its ranks. If they fail to act decisively against these elements, they will lose any moral authority they claim to have, and their credibility as a legitimate organization will be irreparably damaged.

Violence has no place in any organization, especially one as influential as RTEAN. We firmly believe that constructive dialogue and peaceful conflict resolution should be the cornerstone of leadership, not brutal force and intimidation. The assault on Comr. Samgrin highlights a broader issue of unchecked aggression within organizations like RTEAN, which not only erodes trust but also deters meaningful reform and progress.

NANS will not stand idly by while our leaders and members are attacked. We are ready to take action to ensure that justice is served. We will mobilize if necessary, organize protests, and use every legal means at our disposal to ensure that this culture of violence is dismantled. The fight for justice is a fight for all Nigerian students, and we will not back down until those responsible for this disgraceful act face the full consequences of their actions.

We once again emphasize our stern condemnation of the assault on Comr. Olalere Samuel. NANS is fully committed to standing by him during his recovery and will not relent in demanding justice. This incident serves as a clarion call for the reform of RTEAN, and for all organizations to reject the use of violence and intimidation in their dealings. We call on all stakeholders students, activists, and the general public to join us in this fight for justice, as we seek to create a safer, more inclusive environment for leaders and advocates to thrive.

For justice, equity, and the future of our nation, we stand united.
