Edo begins screening of 900 pensioners.

On Wednesday, the Edo State Pension Bureau began evaluating 900 pensioners who departed from service in 2014 or 2015.

Mr. Ambrose Akhato, the Permanent Secretary/Chairman of Edo State Pension Bureau and Director of Computation/Secretary of the Bureau, spoke to journalists at the State Pension Bureau Office in Benin City. He stated that the exercise aims to clear the backlog owed by previous administrations.

The Chairman of the Bureau stated, “The screening exercise has brought smiles to the faces of pensioners.” Pensioners should take advantage of this unique opportunity to participate in the screening process.

“Two years ago, in June 2022, we conveyed to Mr. Governor the necessity to screen retirees who departed from the military between 1996 and 2013 and had yet to receive their gratuity, and His Excellency graciously approved the screening procedure.

We have been compensating those who were screened for quite some time. That is the purpose for this screening, so that the sequential arrangement of gratuity payments in Edo State can continue.”

He said, “We wrote to His Excellency about the need to screen 2014 and 2015 pensioners, and he approved it.” We began paying them after completing earlier payments. This screening began on Monday, July 1st, 2024.

It will expire on July 12th, 2024. We will also be screening via Skype beginning July 8th, 2024 and ending July 19th, 2024 for individuals residing outside of the country.

Those who live outside of Edo State or Benin City and are unable to attend the physical exam, as well as those who live within the city but are unable to attend due to health issues, will be screened via Skype.”

The chairman went on to say, “We can no longer pay people who are late immediately. Their difficulties will be referred to as death benefits. When we have exhausted the funds available to pay them, we will transfer it to the State Ministry of Justice, where their next-of-kin will be screened and compensated.”

“The Bureau has screened over 286 pensioners thus far, and it anticipates screening 900 pensioners in the next two weeks.”
