In a collaborative effort between the Delta State Police command, local vigilante, and hunter groups, a suspected kidnapper was neutralized during a fierce gun duel in Ughelli Local Government Area. The operation led to the rescue of two abducted victims.
According to reports, the police received intelligence on April 26, 2024, regarding suspected kidnappers hiding in Okuno, Orogun, alongside kidnapped victims. Acting on the directive of the Commissioner of Police, Delta State CP Abaniwonda Olufemi, DPO Abraka Division SP Fabian Ayameh led police operatives to the hideout. Alongside members of the Abraka vigilante and hunters group, they stormed the area and engaged the kidnappers in a gun battle. One suspect sustained serious gunshot injuries, while others managed to flee. The authorities recovered an AK-47 rifle and eleven rounds of 7.62mm ammunition.
The rescued victims, whose identities were withheld, were reunited with their families unharmed. Unfortunately, the injured suspect succumbed to his injuries while receiving medical attention. The police have launched a manhunt for the fleeing suspects.
In a separate incident on April 24, 2024, the Eagle Net Special Squad Surveillance team patrolling along Ovirigor Road, Ughelli, intercepted a motorcycle and discovered a significant quantity of suspected Indian Hemp in the possession of the rider, 38-year-old Orji Timothy. Further investigation led to the recovery of a Locally Made Double Barrel Pistol, Tramadol, Swinol, and cutlasses from Timothy’s residence.
Additionally, on April 22, 2024, a distress call prompted the swift response of the DPO Ovwian/Aladja, CSP Bulus Musa, to apprehend Anthony Odumegwu attempting to steal a motorcycle. A search of the suspect and the crime scene resulted in the recovery of an English Beretta Pistol without a magazine.
Investigations into these incidents are ongoing as authorities strive to maintain peace and security in Delta State.
