Musiliu Akinsanya, popularly known as MC Oluomo, has been sacked as the National President of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) by the Appeal Court in Abuja.¹ This ruling invalidates his emergence as president and affirms Tajudeen Baruwa as the re-elected NURTW president.
Background of the Case
The Southwest Zone of the NURTW had elected MC Oluomo as the new National President during the Quadrennial Delegate Conference held at the union’s Zonal Secretariat in Osogbo, Osun State. However, Baruwa opposed MC Oluomo’s inauguration, stating that it disregards rulings by the National Industrial Court and Court of Appeal, which affirmed him as the union’s legitimate leader.
Court Ruling
The Appeal Court judges, Justice Hamma Akawu Barka, Justice Nnamdi Okwy Dimgba, and Justice Asmau Ojuolape Akanbi, unanimously dismissed the appeal and awarded a cost of ₦100,000 against the appellants. The judgement reads, “This Appeal is devoid of merit and the same is hereby dismissed”.
Implications
This ruling is a significant development in the leadership tussle within the NURTW. With Baruwa’s affirmation as president, the union is expected to stabilize under his leadership. The court’s decision also highlights the importance of adhering to legal processes and respecting the rule of law in resolving disputes.
